Hello, fellow friends! This is the Character Creation Exchange. Whether you are a fan who likes to study famous characters, a writer who loves to create fan-fiction, or an artist who is keen to write original characters, here we can introduce and discuss the shaping of the characters, the social issues behind them, and share your thoughts on. The club focuses on the techniques and application of modern and contemporary literary works, aiming at allowing fans of literature, film and television works to analyze characters through rich knowledge of literature, psychology, and sociology. Main Club Activity Plan:
Icebreaker Meeting (self-introductions) and club introduction, followed by filling out interest area preferences (e.g., painting, literature, film/TV works, personal recommendations, etc.) [Estimated time: late August]
Character Analysis & Creation Session 1: Analyze and discuss naming conventions when designing original characters:
What methods do people generally use when naming their OCs? (Existing names, invented names, using roots/allusions)
Combined with linguistics —> what kinds of impressions do different names give? (Length, rhythm, syllables, etc.)
Which language's roots/allusions are most likely to be used as name sources? Why? [Estimated time: early September]
Character Analysis & Creation Session 2: Discussion on the two mindsets of "characters serving the plot" versus "the plot serving characters."
Which approach do you prefer? Does this preference have anything to do with your early exposure to/understanding of the fandom?
How do you balance character and plot? When designing, how do you ensure that personal preferences don't compromise overall coherence / how do you let the plot support personal tastes?
Share your usual design thought process! How do you design a world with well-developed characters and a complete storyline? (Think conceptually)
What is the difference between an OC and a setting? [Estimated time: early or late October]
Story Club Session 1: Online voting to select a short story for reading, followed by discussion in the meeting on its techniques and approaches to character design, ending with a character portrait drawing session [Estimated time: late November]
Discussion Activity: How do we define OCs? What distinguishes OC creators from writers/artists? Analyzing the impact of OC community culture on those interested in creating OCs — have you been influenced by the OC community? (Possible joint event with the Subculture Studies Club) [Estimated time: late February 2025]
Story Club Session 2: Online voting to select a short story for reading, followed by discussion in the meeting on its techniques and approaches to character design, ending with a character portrait drawing session [Estimated time: late March]
Final Project: Write a short story (no word count or language restrictions) centered around the characters analyzed and created over the course of the academic year, then print and bind it into a booklet for submission or personal archiving. Technical support (online seminars) will be provided during the writing process. [Estimated completion time: mid-May]
